A tech support rep calls you at home and offers to fix a computer bug that you haven’t even noticed, or a popup warning appears on your screen instructing you to dial a number for help. In this con, scammers pose as tech support employees of well-known computer companies and hassle victims into paying for their “support.”
You’ve been invited to check out a favorite retailer to secretly shop their store and evaluate the quality of service, product availability and the best part - keep the items plus earn a paycheck. It really does sound like a too good to be a true opportunity, however, such a job does exist and is sanctioned by the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA) mspa-global.org. Naturally, for every good opportunity, there is a scam behind it.
BOSTON - The New Year is in full swing and so are scams targeting utility customers across the country and right here in Massachusetts. Already this year, customers in many towns around the state have been approached by scammers, either on the phone or at their door. To warn customers, Eversource and Better Business Bureau Serving Massachusetts are teaming up to ensure that people know the telltale signs of scams, so they can avoid becoming a victim.

The gaming company behind such popular titles as Fortnite and Infinity Blade has an “F” rating with Better Business Bureau due to unanswered customer complaints. BBB serving Eastern North Carolina (BBB) is warning consumers about Epic Games of Cary, NC, which has 279 BBB complaints on file in the past three years with 271 of those complaints filed in the last year alone. Of the 279 total complaints, 247 of those have gone unanswered.
Epic Games is the creator of a number of well-known games that have a global following; in addition to Fortnite and Infinity Blade, they make Unreal, Gears of War, and Shadow Complex. The company has grown significantly in the past twelve months, and their most popular game, Fortnite, currently boasts more than 6 million followers on Twitter. A majority of complaints submitted to BBB against Epic Games deal with customer service and refund or exchange issues. One complainant wrote, “Epic Games failed to protect customer security, resulting in several unsanctioned charges over mine and my partner's account.” Another complainant added that, “There is no phone number or proper email response time to return my unauthorized charge of $160. Nobody will answer, and I feel cheated.”
BBB has attempted to contact Epic Games on numerous occasions, but the company has failed to respond.

Reports to BBB Scam Tracker confirmed that online purchase scams were the top scams present in Eastern MA, ME, RI & VT in 2018. The list was compiled based on more than 800 scam reports filed by consumers in the area on bbb.org/scamtracker. Not of all of the consumers that reported these scams lost money, as many recognized the scam before being victimized, but reported them to help warn others.
