BBB Warning: Political Scams Expected to Increase as U.S. Mid-Term Election Nears

Scammers are opportunists who take advantage of whatever is in the news or being chatted about on social media. It’s common around this time of year to receive phone calls from political pollsters asking questions about who you plan to vote for, and scammers mimic those legitimate calls.

Reduce Robocalls with these Trusted Tips from BBB

It’s estimated that Americans received 24.3 billion robocalls in the first seven months of this year, according to YouMail Robocall Index. This is a 41% year-over-year increase for this ongoing national problem. These unwanted calls are the top consumer complaint to the FCC and their top consumer protection priority.

According to the FCC, a robocall is a phone call that uses a computerized auto dialer to deliver a prerecorded message to a large number of people. Most of these calls are illegal. However, similar calls from debt collections, charitable solicitations, political causes or campaigns, and emergencies involving danger to life and safety, are all exempt from the rules.

The FCC rules require a caller to obtain your written consent before it may make a prerecorded telemarketing call to your home or wireless phone number. They also require a caller to obtain your consent, oral or written, before it may make an autodialed or prerecorded call or text to your wireless number.

Today's technology has allowed these calls to be made from anywhere in the world and cheaper than ever before. This is why it’s become more and more of a problem for the receiver. Even if the caller I

D is showing a “local” number, it may be a scammer. Many steps have been taken by the government and other agencies to prevent illegal robocalls and they’re still working to reduce them. But it’s a difficult problem that requires a complex solution.
